Podcasts

Well... I've been downloading and listening to a bunch of different knitting podcasts via my ipod. Since I travel 3 hours round trip to get to work, I have a lot of time on my hands to knit and listen to people talking about knitting. I haven't been doing much knitting on the train as of late but I think I'm going to try to get into it more. Small projects work best and I'm not working on anything small at the moment. I'd like to learn how to make socks but I've been having troubles teaching myself via books and the www. I just can't get a hold of those needles right. Anway... back to the podcasts... I've tried several and so far, my favorite is one called Cast-On. I'm going to try to add a link to it on my blog so that you can check it out! More next time and I'll give you a sneak peak into my current project.

Well.. I promised to tell how I learned how to knit so here goes. It was June 16, 2004.... my Mother was visiting from Florida. She's always been a glorious knitter all my life. Not sure why I had not gotten the knitting bug until then but in any event she showed me how to cast on, knit and pearl and I was on my way. The reason that I know the exact date is that I made a few short videos of her teaching me so that when she left, if I forgot, I could replay the video and easily remember. After that, I purchased the book Stitch n Bitch and utilized the net to help me with my skills. There was a knitting class that was offered at my office last year that I took. It was an intro class teaching beginners...I wasn't a beginner at that point but I took it anyway. I was able to learn some other things like increasing and decreasing. Sometimes just learning from a person is better.

Here is a picture of the first project that I ever made from start to finish (completed 9/24/04). It's a scarf that I made for myself and I love it. There is a huge mistake on it that I was unaware of until I learned more about knitting and recoginzing the stitches. But when I look at that mistake today... I realize how far I've come. Anyway.. That's all for now. I want to get in a few rows on my current project tonight. More on that later.

Weekend

So I went to PA this weekend to visit my friend who just had a baby. I had made her a small baby blanket and was looking forward to giving it to her. It was my real first big completed project (can't count scarves and things). She loved it. She's a friend that can really appreciate hand made items. Here is a picture of it.

I'm a fairly new knitter but I'm getting better all the time. I've started a knitting group at work. We meet once a week at lunch time and we all try to help each other out. It's a good way to learn on the fly and to see what each of us is making each week is fun as well. More on how I started knitting later.
